How do I clean my Occhio luminaires?

Cleaning Luna luminaires
Cean luminaires of the Luna series when they are switched off and cooled down. For cleaning, we recommend using the microfibre cloth supplied. Dust inside the glass sphere can be removed carefully with a feather duster. Do not touch the cone when doing this. Here you will find a detailed cleaning tutorial.

Cleaning surfaces
Clean Occhio luminaires only when they are switched off and cooled down to avoid residue sticking to the luminaire.

For cleaning all surfaces, use only soft materials, preferably microfibre cloths.

We recommend cleaning lacquered and anodised surfaces (matt white, glossy white, matt black, matt gold, matt chrome/matt silver) only using cleaning agents that don't contain alcohol additives, for example glass cleaner.

If the matt-white surface is very dirty, we recommend careful cleaning with a pH-neutral and perfume-free hand soap.

To clean the high-quality metal of the phantom, shiny chrome, rose gold, bronze, phantom and black phantom surfaces and keep them free of streaks and fingerprints, we recommend using alcohol concentrate from the pharmacy. The alcohol concentration should be at 70 %.

Cleaning Edizione Lusso materials
The natural materials of our Edizione Lusso luminaires can be cleaned with special care products. When using cleaning products, please follow the manufacturer's instructions.

For cleaning the marble base of the luminaire, we recommend a combi-product that protects and cares for your marble plate at the same time.

The carbon arches of Mito floor luminaires and canopies of ceiling and pendant luminaires made of Ascot leather can be treated with a leather care set.

Cleaning glass lenses
Series: Sento, Più, Più R, Più RS, io spotlights, lui, lei, Puro

Cleaning our glass lenses is a very simply process: in the case of light dirt, we recommend a dry microfibre cloth and, if necessary, glass cleaner without added alcohol.

In the case of dirtier lenses, the lens can be removed and rinsed by hand with detergent and hot water or also cleaned in the dishwasher (not suitable for cone glass from the Più R and Più RS series). Vinegar essence also achieves very good results. If you have one, the lenses can also be cleaned in an ultrasonic bath

Cleaning of plastic lenses
Series: io 3d, io duna

The lenses, which are made of high-quality plastic, should be cleaned exclusively with a microfibre cloth and, if necessary, clean water.

Our io 3d lenses (such as io tavolo or io sospeso) are not suitable for cleaning in the dishwasher. If they are very dirty, we recommend cleaning by hand with detergent without additives, such as a sensitive washing-up liquid. Under no circumstances should you clean the lenses with glass cleaners containing alcohol or spirits or with compressed air spray, as this can damage the lens.

Cleaning inserts
Inserts such as color filters or soft edge glass can be cleaned using a microfibre cloth and, if necessary, clean water.

Cleaning Divo glass spheres
Divo glass spheres can be cleaned in the dishwasher or rinsed by hand.

Afterwards, dry with a clean, lint-free cloth and, while wearing gloves, put them back into the holder as soon as possible, so that no dust accumulates inside.

Residual dust can be removed effectively with a compressed air spray.

How do I change my light source?

LED luminaires have a life time of approximately 50,000 hours, which is equivalent to approximately 40 years of normal residential use. Even if a luminaire's life time is reached, the individual LEDs do not go out, but instead gradually grow darker.

If an Occhio LED luminaire no longer works, this can be due to a variety of different causes.
If the luminaire fails, we recommend that you consult your specialist retailer. If they cannot find anything wrong with the application or installation, we'll be happy to take your luminaire back for repair and replace individual components such as LED chips.

For instructions on replacing halogen light sources, see our video tutorial on halogen light source replacement.

How do I convert my halogen luminaire to LED with clipLED?

The light sources for Occhio mains voltage halogen luminaires have a B15d socket. Light sources in this shape and with the B15d socket are available on the market as a replacement in LED. These light sources do not achieve the characteristics of the original halogen light source in terms of their brightness or the quality of their light.

With clipLED, Occhio offers the ideal replacement for the halogen light source – in terms of both brightness and quality of light.

The clipLED modules are available for all luminaires in the Sento series, for Puro heads from the halogen head/body system with a B15d socket and for Più spotlights with a G9 plug.

Please note:

Più halogen luminaires have a special plastic ring that is required exclusively for the use of halogen light sources. However, if you change to a clipLED module, this ring must be removed. This ensures that the lens and any required color filter fit easily into the luminaire head.

Unfortunately, clipLED does not provide an LED replacement for luminaires that use low-voltage halogen with a Gy6.35 base. The Sento/Puro lettura reading luminaires and Sento/Puro tavolo table luminaires are always low-voltage luminaires.

Mobile luminaires with high-voltage halogens, such as Sento / Puro terra, can in principle be converted with clipLED. Please note, however, that some models are equipped with dimmers that are not compatible with clipLED. This can be remedied by having the dimmer replaced by our service team. In this case, costs may be incurred for the conversion.

How do I change the glass and lenses of my luminaire?

The lenses of your Occhio luminaires can be replaced. With smaller lenses or flat glass, the lighting effect of your luminaire can always be changed – for example, to focus or widen the light.

The smaller lenses are placed behind the lens in the luminaire, the flat glasses are placed directly behind the lens and inserted together with it.

You will find detailed instructions on how to replace the lenses in the mounting instructions that come with your luminaire.

Mounting

Can I put an Occhio luminaire in my bathroom or kitchen?

With an IP value of IP20, our indoor luminaires are not certified for wet rooms. However, outdoor luminaires in the Sito series have an IP value of IP65 and are therefore suitable for wet rooms.

Kitchens and bathrooms are not considered wet rooms when used normally, so Occhio indoor luminaires can be used there.

In bathrooms, there are country-specific rules for the approval of 230-V outlets, regardless of the luminaire. Luminaires without a wet room protection class, i.e. with an IP value of IP20, may be installed in properly placed electrical outlets in the bathroom.

Placement above the hob may cause interference with the infrared sensor, as the heat may activate the sensor. In this case, the sensor can be deactivated.

How do I mount my Occhio luminaire?

Mounting instructions for Occhio luminaires can be found in our download section.

Suspended luminaires with height adjustment cannot be mounted directly on sloping ceilings. A wedge must be placed between the sloping ceiling and the luminaire's canopy, in the diameter of the luminaire canopy and with the specific angle of the roof slope. We recommend that you have this wedge made from wood by your local carpenter and painted in the ceiling color.

Occhio luminaires are available with a variety of mounting options. Surface mounting (up) works in all situations. This also applies to suspended luminaires without height adjustment up to a roof slope of 30°. Up luminaires are mounted directly on the wall or ceiling and connected to 230 V.

For mounting flat, pure and recessed luminaires, a suspended ceiling or cavity wall must be available for flush mounting.

For almost all Occhio luminaires, a solution can be found with a sideways inlet if the electrical outlet is not in the right place. For Mito volo and Mito soffitto, there is no sideways inlet for design reasons.

Detailed video tutorials on how to mount our luminaires are available for the following models:

My luminaire is hanging or standing crooked. What can I do?

For all suspended luminaires, it can help to pull the luminaire out once as far as it will go and then draw it back up so that the cables can wind up properly. If this is not enough, see the mounting instructions for your luminaire for more fine adjustment options.

Mito sospeso:
Behind each canopy is a rotary wheel, which allows a height adjustment of +/- 5 mm.

Mito volo:
Behind the magnetically attached cover in the canopy, you will find a slide control, which allows a fine adjustment of +/- 5 mm.

Sento sospeso:
If you look into the luminaire head from below, you will see that there are three Allen screws (2.0 mm Allen) at the point where the cables enter the head from above. These screws allow the height of the cables to be adjusted by +/- 5 mm.

Mito raggio and largo:
Between the luminaire ring and the luminaire body is a conical ring, which allows fine adjustment of the luminaire head for accurate, horizontal adjustment of the ring.

Operation

How do I operate my Occhio luminaire?

Gesture control
Most of our luminaires can be easily and intuitively operated by hand without touching the luminaire thanks to the »touchless control« feature. Depending on the design and series, luminaires can be dimmed, the distribution of direct and indirect light adjusted and the color temperature altered, all with just a gesture.

Here we explain in simple terms how gesture control works.

Gesture control can be deactivated in the head of Sento luminaires or on the Mito box.

Occhio air
With Occhio air, you can control your luminaire(s) individually or as a group via the Occhio air controller or app.

How do I synchronise my luminaires?

If several mounted luminaires are to provide exactly the same light (e.g. several suspended luminaires above a table), the luminaires can be synchronised with each other. No matter which luminaire you operate with a gesture, all luminaires in the group then switch synchronously.

For luminaires purchased in 2022 or later, synchronisation can be achieved via Occhio air. We show you how to configure luminaires, scenes and groups in the following video tutorials.
Occhio air tutorial – setting up the app and controller
Occhio air tutorial – configuring luminaires, scenes and groups

Luminaires without Occhio air can be retrofitted to enable synchronous gesture control as well. Luminaires purchased before 2022 may be able to be synchronised with a cable.

For more information, please feel free to contact your nearest Occhio store or specialist retail partner.

How do I use my luminaire with my home control system (smart home, DALI, KNX)?

Integration thanks to a simple switching signal
For individual luminaires, we recommend integrating them into the existing home control system by means of a simple switching signal. This is because many Occhio luminaires can be controlled directly on the luminaire and all can be controlled with Occhio air.
Control by gesture or Occhio air is the technically more sophisticated control option since they are specially adapted to the product.
This means that:

In a completely normal three-wire electrical installation, a switch and no dimmer must be installed.
In an existing control system with data lines or even wireless data transmission, a switch actuator must be installed. The interface to the luminaire is power on and power off.

This maintains all of the luminaires' functions. No further programming in the home control system is needed.

Full integration into home control systems
If you want to fully integrate Occhio luminaires into your home control system, there are two options:

1. Installation of an Occhio air/DALI gateway – a small device that is connected to the existing home control system with a DALI line to a DALI actuator and which is simultaneously connected to the Occhio air network via Bluetooth. The luminaires then appear in the Occhio air network and at the same time appear as devices in the home control system. Desired programming must be done in the network from which the settings are then to be retrieved – via the home control system or Occhio air network.

2. All Occhio luminaires are also available with a direct DALI connection. However, with this option, the gesture control, »up/down fading« and possibly »color tune« features are no longer possible (except where integrated with a DALI DT 8 standard). With this solution, remote power supply units must also be installed for all luminaires, except those in the Mito series (Occhio pro products).

Integration into home control systems, smart home systems, Siri, Alexa and Apple HomeKit is not a standard solution. However, it can be solved by a specialist reprogramming the existing home control system.

All of the solutions can also be found in even more detail in our "Occhio and KNX/DALI – solutions for building control systems" section.

Philipps Hue
Philipps Hue is a Bluetooth based system, just like Occhio air. Philipps Hue lights can be integrated into an Occhio air network. Occhio air luminaires, on the other hand, cannot be integrated into a Philipps Hue network, as functionalities would be lost there.

Occhio air

Occhio air is not working. What can I do?

Occhio air is a Bluetooth-based lighting control system based on Casambi.
The Occhio air app sends information to the luminaires via Bluetooth – and information is also exchanged between the luminaires.

Occhio air is a computer-based system – so, as with a PC, a restart often helps:
We recommend in the first instance disconnecting the luminaires from the power, so switch them off at the switch. If there is no switch and the luminaires are supplied with power continuously, remove and reinsert the fuse.

Closing and reopening the app can also help.

If the app is used by a variety of end devices, it may be necessary to update the network:
in the Occhio air app, select the "more" setting and click "Change network" in the bottom view. Then activate the "Refresh" icon at the top right.

Deactivating and re-activating Bluetooth can also help.

Our tutorials provide a good overview of how to set up and operate the Occhio air app:
Occhio air tutorial – setting up the app and controller
Occhio air tutorial – configuring luminaires, scenes and groups

How and where can the Occhio air module be used?

The Occhio air module is a small Bluetooth dimmer (trailing-edge phase cut dimming) that is connected upstream of the luminaire.

It can be placed in a hollow ceiling, flush-mounted box or switch box without the need for additional screw terminals. Wiring takes place directly in the module – phase and neutral in, dimmed phase and neutral out.

If none of these options are available, the »air« module can be mounted between the wall/ceiling and the luminaire using the »air« adapter.

Can I retrofit Occhio air?

All luminaires from Occhio can be retrofitted with Occhio air.

For luminaires in the Mito series, a corresponding Mito air box can simply be ordered and inserted into the canopy instead of the Mito set box. In Sento luminaires, the Bluetooth chip is permanently installed in the head, so the head of the Sento luminaire must be sent in to us to have Occhio air retrofitted.

All other Occhio luminaires and also all dimmable luminaires from other manufacturers can be integrated into the Occhio air network through an external Bluetooth module.

The »air« module is a small Bluetooth dimmer (trailing-edge phase cut dimming) that is connected to the power supply of the luminaire. The Occhio air module can be placed in a hollow ceiling, flush-mounted box or switch box.

If none of these options are available, the »air« module can be mounted between the wall/ceiling and the luminaire using the »air« adapter.

What is the difference between evolution and classic in terms of Occhio air?

Since 2021 there has been a new version of the Occhio air app (software) and our Occhio air luminaires (software + hardware).
The new version, evolution, has the following changes compared to the classic version:

classic: 126 luminaires per network | evolution: 256 luminaires per network
classic: 2 administrator levels | evolution: 3 administrator levels

Since a hardware update has taken place in Occhio air luminaires, it may not be possible to use older Occhio luminaires or Occhio air modules in an evolution network.

If you already have luminaires in your network, we recommend that you also set up the new luminaires as classic luminaires.

Warranty

How do I register my luminaire for the five-year warranty?

The luminaire is shipped with a warranty code.
To extend the warranty period, the product must be registered with Occhio using the warranty code.

If no warranty code is enclosed or the code does not work, the product may already have been registered with Occhio by the retailer. In this case, you can contact Occhio and have your case checked.

The product can be registered with Occhio for a warranty extension to five years within the statutory warranty period of two years. After the statutory warranty period expires, registration with Occhio is no longer possible.

If you need spare parts, please contact a specialist retailer near you.

Light planning

How do I bring the ideal light into my home with Occhio luminaires?

The right lighting for a room depends on many factors.
Primarily, it is important for the optimal lighting of your rooms to include functional light above work surfaces, above tables, for reading and at the mirror.

Pendants over tables
When it comes to illuminating tables, you need one round suspended luminaire (Mito sospeso, Sento sospeso, io sospeso, lei sospeso) for each metre of table.

Mito volo 100 is sufficient for tables of length 160–200 cm, Mito volo 140 for tables 200 cm–240 cm.

The ideal suspension height above a table is 60 to 80 cm from the table.
For rooms with very high ceilings, Occhio offers suspended luminaires in customised lengths.

Advice and inspiration
Our lighting designers are available for detailed planning. Feel free to contact your specialist retailer.

In the Inspiration section, you find ideas on how to bring the perfect light to your living room, bedroom, home office, kitchen, bathroom or hallway. As well as projects that inspire.

What's the difference between a lamp and a luminaire?

In the days of halogen, a "lamp" was the actual light source, i.e. the light bulb. The luminaire is the product that surrounds the light source and is the actual design product. Occhio LED luminaires are always a single unit comprised of both the light and the luminaire, which is why we call LED products luminaires.
