With a finely tuned lighting concept, Occhio shapes the atmosphere of the luxury hotel Cugó Gran Vittoriosa in Malta. Set within the charm of ancient walls, Occhio’s light unfolds throughout the historic building, revealing this architectural gem - inside and out - in a new brilliance. The lighting design respectfully embraces the building’s historic fabric and reveals the dialogue between architecture, materiality and atmosphere. From the reception and bar to the triplex suites and wellness area, a precise composition of light emerges. One that does not dominate the architecture, but gently supports it and brings out its full potential.
Rugged stone, gentle soul
In the reception area, light becomes the hotel’s first atmospheric gesture: a cluster of Sento sospeso descends delicately from the glass dome above the entrance. Sento verticale adds precise accents, drawing the eye towards the architectural lines of the space. The glow of Sento letto echoes the language of the building itself, shaping characteristic arches of light - subtle homage to the soul of the place.
Light as a guide
Throughout the many corridors, staircases and transitions of the historic building, light becomes a means of orientation. Occhio uses brightness and intensity deliberately at key junctions, allowing guests to find their way through the hotel almost intuitively. A Sento sospeso suggests a new direction, while a Sento verticale draws attention to the staircase and the grandeur of the stairway itself. The luminaires become elegant details within this setting, subtle in presence, yet indispensable in effect.
Turning night into day
A unique situation emerges within the hotel’s culinary spaces: the bar is closed off from the outside world, creating its distinctive sense of intimacy. For the lighting design, this calls for a sensitive balance between atmosphere, orientation and staging. A Coro moon spider cloud emphasises the horizontal lines of the hotel bar, framing the counter and creating an inviting atmosphere in which to linger. In the niche behind, io pico picks up on the gentle curves of the arches. The focus lies on an intimate, almost private ambiance, softly underlined by the luminaires’ rounded design language.
“When a beam of light touches Maltese stone, it reveals its unmistakable character: warm, sandy-yellow tones that begin to glow from within. Occhio’s light enhances colour and texture, bringing the space to life in its full vibrancy.”
Guided encounter
In the corridors, flooded with sunlight, the lighting creates continuity and familiarity. Sento sospeso traces the way ahead, lending the space a new sense of generosity. At every room door, a Luna parete welcomes guests at the threshold of their temporary home. A gentle transition emerges between public space and private retreat, guided by light that offers both orientation and a feeling of comfort.
In the interplay of levels
The lofty spaces of the triplex rooms and suites open up a diverse range of design possibilities across three levels. This interplay of height, perspective and openness is reflected in the arrangement of the Mito sospeso pendants, whose light unfolds throughout the entire space. Particularly striking is their effect when viewed from outside: like a luminous cascade, the pendants appear suspended within the open volume, revealing the architectural generosity of the rooms. Gioia lettura grounds the space, bringing balance and harmony to a relaxed retreat.
Contrasts in harmony
In the wellness area, lighting atmospheres transform the space depending on the desired mood - sometimes clear and bright, sometimes softly dimmed and relaxing. For these multifaceted moments, several layers of light are orchestrated. io verticale provides vertical illumination, while Mito aura combines direct and indirect light. Mito sfera accentuates the mirror area, and io giro spotlights create selective accents throughout the room. The result is an interplay of function, calm and sensual atmosphere.
