David Kosock about Coro moon

Coro moon as an architectural statement

David Kosock is a renowned interior designer and gallerist from Berlin. As co founder of Studio Vaust, he designs spaces between raw elegance and purist aesthetics and was recognized as an AD100 designer by AD Magazine, among others. Light is more than illumination for him, it is a creative compass. With Coro moon, he has found the instrument that brings his imagination to light.

What criteria are most important to you when selecting lighting?

David Kosock: A space needs to be well lit functionally while also creating the right emotions. What feels harmonious is, of course, subjective. Still, there is a shared sense of when a space feels good and when it feels unsettled or uncomfortable. In our work, we like to use light in a way that makes you look twice. Technical perfection alone is not enough. It becomes interesting when atmosphere is created while a subtle moment of tension remains, that feeling that there is more than what you first perceived. This is exactly what fascinates me about Occhio’s fireball technology: the purer it appears, the stronger its impact.

What fascinates you about Coro moon?

David Kosock: Coro moon has an incredible sense of purity. Its technical sophistication is not immediately visible, yet it is clearly felt within the space. The design without a glass sphere, reduced to the fireball alone, appears almost simple at first glance. And that is exactly what fascinates me. The luminaire only truly reveals itself upon closer inspection. This second moment of realization is key for me: at first, you think you understand everything, and then you begin to notice how precisely and subtly the light is actually guided. Added to this is the raw, velvety surface, which gives the whole piece a distinctive depth.

Which features of Coro moon do you find particularly relevant?

David Kosock: “Feature” can sound quite technical. For me, it is more about the magic of the luminaire that makes it so special. The central idea is to unite directional light within a luminous sphere. That, for me, is the true feature, as it doesn’t feel like an add on but rather the very core of the design. Coro moon is therefore more than just a light source. It creates an atmosphere without imposing itself. The light feels precise and at the same time emotional. And that combination is rare: you can sense the depth of expertise and development behind it, yet the result feels effortless and natural.

“Like the instruments of an orchestra, the luminaires of Coro moon come together in a symphony of light that composes the space in an entirely new way.”

In which application areas do you see the Coro moon series?

David Kosock: I always distinguish between a private and a professional perspective. From a professional point of view in particular, I find Coro moon especially compelling because it can be staged in very different ways. Coro moon zero, in particular, which is fully integrated into the architecture, has a strong appeal for me. It feels almost abstract. In a long corridor with multiple spots aligned in sequence, any technical appearance disappears. What remains is essentially just light, and the fireball as a clear, calm element within the space. It is precisely these kinds of compositions that fascinate me: when a luminaire doesn’t “show what it can do,” but instead holds back and becomes all the more powerful because of it.
