Clärchens Ballhaus

A journey through time between history and modernity

Clärchens Ballhaus, a Berlin original with 111 years of history, was to be given a new, contemporary look without losing its historical charm. The aim was to combine the magic of the mirrored hall with the rough atmosphere of the lower rooms – a place that unites history and modernity and feels like a journey through time. Set designer Uli Hanisch took on this challenge. The Sento series from Occhio fits perfectly into the concept.

Choreography of light and space

Lighting played a decisive role in the concept design: it was intended to create different moods and emphasize the uniqueness of the space. The Sento series luminaires created a play of intimacy and lively brilliance, particularly through the possibility of setting specific accents with uplights and downlights.

Where history lives on

Dark wood, red velvet, and the exposed golden ceiling tell of the splendor of Clärchens, which opened in 1913. Uli Hanisch picked up on these elements: pink and purple add surprising accents, while the refurbished wood paneling, velvet upholstery, and golden details create a warm atmosphere. The surface of the Sento luminaires in brushed bronze complements the ensemble and emphasizes the elegant effect. In this way, the historical authenticity is preserved through restored and reinterpreted details.

Uli Hanisch and his role

Uli Hanisch is a renowned production designer from Germany who is also known for his work in international film productions. He has collaborated with directors such as Tom Tykwer and has received awards for his production design in films such as “Perfume: The Story of a Murderer” and “Babylon Berlin,” as well as “The Queen's Gambit.”Er verstand sich von Anfang an als Gast und Anwalt der Geschichte des Ortes sowie gleichzeitig als Gestalter einer neuen Inszenierung.

What was your vision for the project, and what role did lighting play?

Uli Hanisch: ZThe aim was to preserve the magic of the mirrored hall and combine it with the rough atmosphere of the lower rooms – a place that unites history and modernity. Light played a central role in this: with precisely controllable uplights and downlights, a play of intimacy and lively brilliance was created that underlines the uniqueness of the room.

How would you describe the atmosphere of the restaurant?

Uli Hanisch: It is a place with ballroom flair—a meeting place for culture and gastronomy that brings Berlin's history to life and connects generations. Here, elegance meets playful lightness.

Why were Occhio luminaires chosen?

Uli Hanisch: SSento sospeso and Sento verticale blend discreetly into the overall concept. Their brushed bronze surface harmonizes perfectly with the interior. Flexible lighting control and predefined lighting scenes create exactly the atmosphere that defines Clärchens.
